Summary

Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king。 It’s the highest honour they could hope for … and the most demeaning。 This year, there’s a ninth。 And instead of paper, she’s made of fire

Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara。 Ten years ago, her mother was snatched by the royal guards, and her fate remains unknown。 Now, the guards are back and this time it’s Lei they’re after – the girl with the golden eyes, whose rumoured beauty has piqued the king’s interest。

Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit a king’s consort。 There, Lei does the unthinkable – she falls in love。 Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world’s entire way of life。 Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge。

I’ve read this book before, and it’s still just as incredible。 Absolutely my favorite book ever! Straight out of the gates you see how flawed the kingdom of Ikhara is, and it sets a beautifully terrible tone for the rest of the book。 Lei is such the personality, strong, not because she wants to be, but more because she was forced into it。 And then the romantic aspect? Incredible。 It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t too slow that you became disinterested, which is a hard thing to pull off, so great j I’ve read this book before, and it’s still just as incredible。 Absolutely my favorite book ever! 2,5/3 ⭐️ it was a good story, although there were very slow parts and i felt bored sometimes。 the beginning and end had a good pace, hence the overall good read, but i‘m not too sure if i’ll continue with the sequel。

Kind of a disappointment。。。 I kept waiting for the main character to do something and she never did。 The whole plot should have just followed the love interest, in my opinion。

♡。♡

I liked the first half。 Had to force myself to finish it。 The characters are one dimensional, and honestly Lei is infuriating。 The book should have centered around Wren。 And on top of that。。。。。everyone is praising her for FUCKING NOTHING。 She made a mess of everything, and yet everyone including badass Wren talk about Lei like she hung the moon and stars。 I liked it enough to speed read through the ending。 Not enough to care to continue。

TW: rape, sexual harassment, violence; human and animal cruelty。Girls of Paper and Fire has a rich world。 I adore the caste system introduced to me here。 A lot is yet to be discovered。 I hope I'll get to more of it in the following books。 Surely a fantasy one wouldn't want to miss。Ngan's characters and their upbringings were not something be touched lightly。 Each and every character had no through points of view but y'all the author had an easy way of knowing and growing attach to them。 And when TW: rape, sexual harassment, violence; human and animal cruelty。Girls of Paper and Fire has a rich world。 I adore the caste system introduced to me here。 A lot is yet to be discovered。 I hope I'll get to more of it in the following books。 Surely a fantasy one wouldn't want to miss。Ngan's characters and their upbringings were not something be touched lightly。 Each and every character had no through points of view but y'all the author had an easy way of knowing and growing attach to them。 And when I say each and everyone。 I mean it。 My nose is flaring with red smoke still at the King。As much as I adore the world-building and characters here, I am not so keen of how the plot has gone to its end。 And the fact that somewhere between the book I had been expecting something just anything to grip tighter towards the end。 It doesn't stop me from reading the second novel。 At this point I do hope it gets better。 。。。more

3。5 starsI really enjoyed this book! It had a very interesting premise and I think the first two-thirds of the book were amazingly written and plotted, however, the last third was just a little predictable and anti-climatic。 I'm hoping that the second book kind of makes up for it but my expectations are not very high。 I just think that it's kind of going in the direction of every other fantasy trilogy out there。。。 The romance is amazing。 I love the way it starts and how it slowly creeps up on ou 3。5 starsI really enjoyed this book! The book is really well written, the plot was amazing and the characters were insanely likable and deep。 The world-building was really interesting, the details were so deep and the reader can clearly know what the main character was thinking。 The ending really left an impression and I definitely want to read the second book! Loved this book a lot!

4 1/2 or 5, I’m unsure, it’s probably something in between but it’s not important, what really matters is that this book is incredible。 I loved everything from the beginning to the end。 I can’t wait to continue with the trilogy。 It was just such a stunning read。 I loved Lei, Wren and their romance SO MUCH, I can’t even put it into words。 They were just so beautiful together, their personality so perfect for each other, I was just screaming the whole time while I was reading their scenes。 I also 4 1/2 or 5, I’m unsure, it’s probably something in between but it’s not important, what really matters is that this book is incredible。 I loved everything from the beginning to the end。 I can’t wait to continue with the trilogy。 It was just such a stunning read。 I loved Lei, Wren and their romance SO MUCH, I can’t even put it into words。 They were just so beautiful together, their personality so perfect for each other, I was just screaming the whole time while I was reading their scenes。 I also loved Lei becoming more aware of the world and what was really going on around her through Wren。 Both their personalities as well were really well-written, I loved them both as well。 The Demon King and Blue were both two interesting antagonists and, again, just really well-written。 Also Aoki’s plot and her point of view was interesting and very different from the usual “main character best friend”。 I also found Lill was cute and sweet。 The plot was really compelling and beautiful written as well。 I loved how Natasha Ngan talked about the women’s place in society and men’s supremacy over them, the lgbt’s rights and the great sex-positivity and passions and desires talks。 I didn’t excepts such direct and frank speeches about it but they were really positive and well written。Content warning!!!! for rapes, slavery (including sexual slavery) and animal cruelty (not graphical!) in one scene at the beginning of the book (I’m pretty sure it was in chapter 2)。 。。。more

I’m speechless。 Honestly。 This book was so incredible, for so many reasons。 First of all, the writing。 Oh。 My。 Gosh。 The writing was powerful and beautiful and astonishing。 The passion in which Natasha Nyan wrote this book is visible on every word, sentence, and paragraph。 The world that she created was so well developed and every time I opened the book I felt transported。 Next, the characters。 The characters were another category of wonderful。 The way in which Natasha developed and described ea I’m speechless。 Honestly。 This book was so incredible, for so many reasons。 First of all, the writing。 Oh。 My。 Gosh。 The writing was powerful and beautiful and astonishing。 The passion in which Natasha Nyan wrote this book is visible on every word, sentence, and paragraph。 The world that she created was so well developed and every time I opened the book I felt transported。 Next, the characters。 The characters were another category of wonderful。 The way in which Natasha developed and described each of the characters was perfect。 Everyone felt unique and special, and everyone had an important part of the story。 The main character, Lei, in particular is powerful and inspirational。 The plot of this book was exciting and intoxicating。 Even when not reading, all I could think about was this story。 Another aspect of this book that I greatly love is the love story。 So few young adult books have wlw representation, and seeing myself in this book, portrayed as an actual human and not something that exists for men, was wonderful。 The relationship in the book is everything a relationship should be: supportive, understanding, caring, and more。 Many young adult books like to focus on toxic relationships, and this may be one of the few I’ve read that actually displays a healthy one。 It’s something so simple, yet so important。 Young people seeing what relationships should look like is very important, seeing as they model themselves after different aspects of their lives, including books。 So I would like to take a second to thank Natasha Nyan for writing this book。 Thank you for representing people in such a wonderful light。 Thank you for creating this world and story to give people a break from a much less exciting reality。 Thank you for writing a story that I will never forget, not as long as I live。 。。。more

I definitely was not a big fan of this book… I really enjoyed the first bit but it went downhill pretty quickly for me。 There were a lot of things I didn’t like about it。 It was extremely unoriginal and I felt like I had already read this book 2 or 3 times because it was so similar to other books I’ve read。I absolutely HATED the characters。 With a passion。 Both Ren and Lei were severely lacking in personality。 Lei was whiny, useless, and boring。 Ren was like every other badass female protagonist I definitely was not a big fan of this book… I really enjoyed the first bit but it went downhill pretty quickly for me。 There were a lot of things I didn’t like about it。 It was extremely unoriginal and I felt like I had already read this book 2 or 3 times because it was so similar to other books I’ve read。I absolutely HATED the characters。 With a passion。 Both Ren and Lei were severely lacking in personality。 Lei was whiny, useless, and boring。 Ren was like every other badass female protagonist I have ever read about。 I thought there could have been a lot of room for the “bad guys” to be morally grey (or even interesting at all) but every time I thought I might get some depth in a character or relationship the author shut it down。 The arguments between Lei and Aokie were resolved SO QUICKLY it made their relationship feel extremely superficial。There were also so many parts of the book that were clearly trying to be poetic but just failing。 Natasha’s writing is super basic which isn’t a bad thing it just isn’t a good thing either。 I also personally didn’t like the romance, I’m all for the slow-burn but it progressed super fast and I didn’t really see much chemistry between Ren and Lei。 Not to mention the pacing was super weird。 Like Natasha would spend pages and pages talking about history and boring stories and whatever and then the exciting important things like fight scenes were over after a paragraph。 And finally, I really hated the last 15% of the book。 For some reason they made it seem like Lei was the hero even though she did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at all to help。 In fact, I would argue she only hindered their efforts。 Like Ren had been training her whole life to do something and then Lei was suddenly prepared to do it in a matter of days??? No。 (view spoiler)[and then it finally seemed like she did something useful when she gave the king a final stab。 But of course。 She didn't actually kill him。 So everything was pointless at the end (hide spoiler)]Now don’t get me wrong there were things I liked about this book too。 The cover is gorgeous。 The caste system between the Paper, Steel, and Moon castes was really cool。 I liked some of the side characters like Kenzo and Zel。 And of course, the LGBTQ rep in this book was really great。 So overall…。 This book really could have been better。 If this wasn’t my friend's favorite book I definitely would not have finished it。 I also won’t be reading the second one。 。。。more
